Booker T. Washington gears up for a new season

All eyes are on the returning Booker T. Washington squad as the Tornadoes prepare for their season opener on Saturday against Orson Scott.  Washington’s 14-0 record last season earned them the top rank in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings and in Florida.

Five senior players on last year’s team ranked in the ESPN Top 300 recruits, including all-star quarterback Treon Harris.  This year, the Tornadoes have twelve first year starters.  Quick and agile Maurice Alexander will try to fill in Harris’ big shoes.

Also new to the team is Washington’s coach, Tim Harris Jr.  His father, Tim Harris, and his younger brother, Treon, left the team with a 26-game win streak and back-to-back Class 4A state champions.  Now it’s up to Tim to continue the streak with a relatively new team.

Though they did not hold their No. 1 rank going into this season, Booker T. consistently ranks in the Top 10 amongst major high school rankings.

Washington faces Orson Scott, a Virginia team who went unranked last season.  The Tigers went 14-1 last season with a strong offense and lock down defense.  Scott’s highest offense performance was a 70 display.  On defense, the Tigers only let up more than 14 points once.

Booker T. Washington and Tim Harris Jr. have a lot to prove on Saturday.  Starting off the season with a win will crucial to on Booker T.’s way to defending their state championship.
